STUDY GUIDE – Default Mode

January 26, 2025

Icebreaker: At this point in your life, do you have a favorite “Holy Habit?” If so, why is it your favorite?

Sermon Title: Holy Habits – “Default Mode” – Mark 3:13-19 & Matthew 4:19

Group Discussion:

Read Mark 3:13-15 & Matthew 4:19 – Make sure you are a lifelong disciple of Jesus. A disciple is following Jesus, being changed by Jesus, and on mission with Jesus. What are some ways we can ensure that we are actively living as a lifelong disciple of Jesus (e.g., following, being changed, and on mission)? What are specific practices we can adopt to remain committed to a lifelong journey of discipleship?

Read I Corinthians 11:1 – Make sure you are helping other people become lifelong disciples. We are not pointing people to ourselves; we are pointing people to Jesus. How can we effectively mentor/disciple others in a way that encourages them to deepen their relationship with Jesus rather than becoming dependent on us?

Read Ephesians 5:15-17 & Galatians 6:9 – The Jesus way is intentional. Together, these passages challenge us to live with intentionality as disciples of Jesus. What does it look like to be intentional in how you help others follow Jesus? How can we stay focused and persevere when life feels overwhelming or progress seems slow? Share an example of perseverance from scripture or from a personal discipleship experience.

Read John 13:34-35 – The Jesus way is relational. Jesus’ approach to discipleship was deeply relational; He walked with His disciples, shared life with them, and taught them through personal, intimate connections. How can we adopt a more relational approach to discipleship? Share ideas for ways we can invest in authentic relationships that can then inspire and nurture spiritual growth for both ourselves and those we disciple.

Read Luke 6:40 – The Jesus way is transformational. The world has no counter-argument for a genuinely transformed life. Share and discuss specific areas of transformation in your own lives that could serve as testimonies and evidence for others regarding Jesus’ transformational powers.

Discipleship involves consistently, cumulatively speaking into someone else’s life. Who are you helping become a lifelong follower of Jesus? Action Steps: (1) Follow Jesus Daily: Commit to actively living as Jesus’ disciple, (2) Reflect Life Transformation: Identify one area of your life where Jesus is working to transform you and intentionally live out that change as a testimony to others, and (3) Invest in Relationships: Build authentic, Jesus-centered relationships where you can grow while helping someone else grow spiritually.
