STUDY GUIDE – It’s More than a Book
February 2, 2025Icebreaker: In the past, how successful have you been at keeping a consistent rhythm of reading scripture?
Sermon Title: Holy Habits – “It’s More Than a Book” – Matthew 4:1-11
Group Discussion:
Read John 10:10, Deuteronomy 8:3, & Matthew 4:1-4 – Our primary weapon in spiritual battle is the Sword of the Spirit. How can the bible, as the Sword of the Spirit, strengthen our ability to resist temptation and discern God’s will? How can we cultivate a deeper reliance on scripture as our primary weapon in spiritual warfare?
Read Romans 12:1-2a – Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world. How can we make certain that our daily choices and behaviors align with this call to avoid conformity? Discuss practical ways we can use the bible to resist pressures to conform. Discuss the various “patterns of this world” that are most influential and those that are the most subtle or deceptive. Consider strategies to help recognize and combat these patterns.
Read Romans 12:2b & Ephesians 6:10-18 – Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Which piece of armor do you find most difficult to “put on” daily, and why? How can we intentionally equip ourselves with the full armor of God to remain strong, and on the offensive, to be victorious in spiritual warfare? Discuss the meaning of this portion of the scripture: “With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying…” (Eph 6:18).
Read John 8:31-32 & John 15:1-8 – The Goal: Abide in Jesus. How do these truths challenge our understanding of what it means to truly remain in Jesus? Based on these words from John 15:16 “I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last…,” discuss strategies to ensure that we are abiding in Jesus and producing lasting fruit to advance His Kingdom.
