STUDY GUIDE – Do Good
February 16, 2025Icebreaker: In one-sentence, define what you think it means to be a “good deed doer” for Jesus.
Sermon Title: Holy Habits – “Do Good” – Titus 3:14
Group Discussion:
Read Ephesians 2:8-9 & Titus 3:14 – The gospel nature of good deeds: Not saved by good deeds but to
perform good deeds. How can we reconcile/differentiate the truth that good deeds will not save us; yet as
followers of Jesus, we should feel joy and urgency to perform good deeds? Discuss how we can develop a
holy habit of doing good deeds as a natural response to God’s grace in our lives rather than out of obligation.
Read James 2:26 & Matthew 5:14-16 – The imperative (critical, urgent) nature of good deeds – Why do you
think scripture presents good deeds as an urgent and necessary part of our faith? Why are good deeds not
just optional but critical to a living faith? Discuss practical ways we can act with a sense of urgency.
Read James 2:14-17 & Titus 2:7-8 – The learned nature of good deeds: We must learn, practice, and develop
the habit of doing good deeds. How can we intentionally learn and practice doing good deeds for others?
What are some practical ways to develop good deeds into a regular habit rather than just an occasional act?
Read Mark 10:18 & James 1:17 – The primary nature of good deeds: Our good deeds must be rooted in Jesus
as a response to His gift of salvation. What steps can we take to welcome the Lord, as the ultimate source of
all goodness, to shape the way we perform good deeds so that they are rooted in Him?
Read John 15:5 & Colossians 1:10 – The productive nature of good deeds: Good deeds should bear spiritual
fruit in our own lives and in the lives of others. Discuss ways we can ensure that our good deeds are spiritually
productive, rather than simply outward actions. Share examples of how you have seen good deeds influence
your own spiritual growth and/or spiritual growth in others.

Action Steps: Read Matthew 7:16-23 & Proverbs 3:27-28. Now, consider these three questions and take
action this week: (1) What does the reality of the gospel say to you about doing good right now, (2) What
pressing needs are you aware of right now, and (3) What good deed is in your power to do right now?
